Where His Passion All Began
1. Can you share with us where your passion for farming began? Did you always know that you wanted to pursue this path?
My love for farming started when I was just a kid growing up in Ncorha, Eastern Cape. I spent a lot of time with my uncle, who used to plough and plant for people in our village using his tractor. I remember helping him out and watching how happy people were when their fields were ready. That's when something clicked inside me. The seed for farming was planted in my heart right there.
I also come from a humble background, and growing up with limited opportunities made me want to change things; not just for myself, but for my community. Farming became more than work for me; it became a way to create hope and opportunity where it's often missing.
2. You began in mechanical engineering before moving into agriculture. How has your engineering background influenced your approach to modern farming?
Yeah, I actually started in mechanical engineering, but after finishing, I struggled to find work. That's when I realised maybe engineering wasn't my calling. While it gave me skills that I still use to this day, my heart wasn't fully in it. Farming, on the other hand, felt natural to me.
Still, I don't see that time as wasted. Engineering taught me discipline, planning, and problem-solving, and I use that every day on the farm, whether it’s fixing machinery to improving how we irrigate or manage resources. It's funny how life works out. What I learned back then still helps me grow now.
3. Starting Sahaba Holdings and later securing NYDA funding is an incredible milestone! What were some of the biggest lessons you learned while scaling your operations?
Starting Sahaba Holdings was a big leap of faith. I didn't have much, but I had a clear vision of what I wanted to build. Getting NYDA funding helped us take that next step, but what I learned is that growth takes patience and teamwork.
Running a business in agriculture isn't easy. There are ups and downs, and you can't do it alone. I've learned to value collaboration, to invest in people, and to focus on sustainability.
For me, real success isn't just about what I achieve; it's about how many people I can bring along with me.

The Gear That Keeps Him Going On The Fields
4. Farming is physically demanding, and your days often begin before sunrise. What role does reliable gear (like durable footwear) play in getting the job done?
Farming is definitely not for the faint-hearted. You start before sunrise, and sometimes you're still out there when the sun sets. The land can be rough, muddy, and unpredictable, so what you wear really matters.
A solid pair of Caterpillar boots is more than just shoes — it's part of your toolkit!
When your feet are comfortable and protected, you can focus on the work instead of worrying about the terrain. Good gear keeps you going, and that's something every farmer can relate to.
5. At Cat Footwear, our philosophy is to break new ground in innovation, purpose, and impact. What does breaking new ground mean to you in your own journey?
For me, breaking new ground means not being afraid to start something new, even when you don't have all the answers. It's about challenging what's always been done and finding new ways to grow, literally and figuratively.
In my journey, it's been about showing young people that farming isn't old-fashioned; it's the future. It's about using innovation, community, and heart to build something lasting. Breaking new ground means making sure the next generation has it better than we did, and that's the purpose that keeps me going every day!
